Booher Porch Project

Due to major water damage and wood rot, Ms. Booher hired us to come and repair her back porch and give it a fresh look.

Ms. Booher had her entire roof re-roofed sometime earlier by a professional roofing company, time and date unknown. The back porch roof pitch was about a 1-1/2" pitch and that roofing company went ahead and shingled it with 3 tab asphalt shingles. Most roofers know (you'd assume) that you can't shingle anything lower than a 3-1/2" pitch with any kind of shingles: for it leaks and voids the manufacturer's warranty on the shingles. Obviously this one didn't know this and/or even cared. $$$$.

In addition to this, the gutters were shoved up under the drip edge causing the roof's edges to roll back; creating a shallow recess area of which allowed the water to pool and seep under the shingles. I've seen a many of roofs that have had this very same gutter problem and damage. If your fascia and soffit is rotting away, there is a good chance that you might also have this very same problem.

Ultimately, with all the effects of bad craftsmanship combined, this porch was doomed to rot from the very start.

We removed the roofing layer and replaced all the rotted wood in the rafter tails, soffit, fascia, and the bottom row of decking. We re-roofed with rolls of solid membrane and flashed where the two roofs met. We also added lattice work on the sides and fixed a few other odds and ends around the house.

On a separate project for Ms. Booher, we replaced a 2080 bedroom door, slab, jam, trim and all- and put a stained finish on it to closely match her other doors.
