Ms. Burnett called me again to come and take a look at the rotted door jambs in the front entry way in order to have them replaced or rebuilt.
The door jambs were your standard pine jambs furred out to accommodate the 8" block wall. The outer exterior door casing was just your standard interior door casing that you would find on any interior door.
We decided that we would rebuild the door jamb with cedar, a rot
resilient wood. Rebuilding it with white wood or pine would just rot
away like it was now in a short period of time. It was definitely more
costly (cedars not cheap), but for the longevity of the repair, the pros
out weighed the cons.
The subframe was constructed of treated lumber and was also a little frazzled from rot on the bottom like it was on the exterior board, but I didn't see any need to tear them out for it was still 99% in decent shape.
Since both original door ways looked different, we went ahead and built
them to look the same. I used 1"x4" cedar boards for the outer casing
instead of brick mould or the interior door casing. We thought that
having the interior casing on the outside really looked a little funny.
I put those angles on the lintel but the homeowner had me comeback and cut them off.
