Hollace Roof Job

Mr. and Mrs. Hollace, of Eureka Springs, home's roof was of a three tab shingle composition and he needed a new roof after the hail storm. He wanted something that looked good and that would be weather durable. We recommended a 35 year Architectural style shingle roofing- (something that we prefer for all roof jobs if it's got to be asphalt shingles).

It was a single layer tear off. We pulled out and removed all the old roofing nails, not driving them in flat. By doing this, it prevents 'nail pops' in the future. Nail pops are nails that seem to rise all by themselves to put a hole right through the shingles that's covering them. Thunder is the real culprit here, for the sound resonates onto the rooves and fences also, causing them to vibrate of which then causes nails to remove themselves. I've seen a lot of nail heads poking through shingles. This de-nailing process of ours may take longer, but quality must come first.

As part of a quality built roofing job, we replaced all the decking that showed water damage from bad nailing and holes. We also renailed all the roof decking where the nails have come loose and/or was missing nails. We used for the underlayment 30# felt. Where the shingles overlapped other shingles in the nailing area, we hand drove the roofing nails instead of using mechanical means, so as to not drive a nail through the first layer of singles- creating a possible leak with a nail hole.

We wanted straight rows, so we staged every 6 rows from the left to the right all the way up the roof, staying true to the guide lines (something we do anyways. We don't like to just slap it on there and hope for the best. It is one of the most obvious part of one's house and it has to look good, too, we feel.) We used step flashing for the gabled walls, all new roof vent covers, and attic vents. He is very pleased with the straight line look of the finished product.
