Mr. Wachter's bathroom floor was a tiled floor and they felt that it was too dark and they wanted to change the looks of it to a lighter tile.
They have already purchased a self adhesive stick down vinyl tile, and they were instructed to lay down some luaun before installing the stickers.
Being that this was by a tub, a site customarily exposed to heavy moisture, I recommend not using the luaun. As we know, luaun tends to swell and eventually separate when wet.
Being that they were concerned with longevity and cost effectiveness, I recommended a more water resilient product like 1/4" Hardy tile backer board.
I first removed all the base trim on the bottom of the walls to be re-installed later.
Since the already laid tiles were all of differing height, I scoured the tile's surface with a die grinder and then set the backer board in a layer of thinset using a 1/2" notched trowel.
I let this sit for 24 hours to dry.
The edges of the backer board were offset a little bit, so I floated a thin layer of thinset over the joints. After sanding it down smooth and level, I painted a layer of sealer over the float.
The new floor when down easily enough. I re-installed the base trim and sealed the floor next to the tub with tub and tile caulk.
Also on this job, I cut out and replaced the broken toilet floor flange because the toilet rocked in place.
I also installed several towel racks, a tub safety bar, and various other bathroom accessories for the homeowners.
